ITINERARY: LEON - SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Leon is one of the major cities of the Way. Noted for its monuments, such as the XII Gothic Cathedral, with its spectacular stained glass windows, the Basilica of San Isidoro with incredible frescoes (Romanesque Sistine Chapel), the Pantheon of the Kings, and the Parador Hostal San Marcos, which was built as a hospital for pilgrims.

ARRIVAL IN LEON. Lodging and dinner. 

You spend the night in Leon and the next day you start the first stage of the journey.

STAGE LEON-RABANAL(69,8 KMS - 43,27 MILES)

Breakfast and Begining of the journey.

You continue walking through the moor of the province of León. Flat stage that runs along well-marked trails.

Astorga is sometimes considered the capital of Maragatería. A detour of less than one kilometre from the Road to Santiago will take you to Castrillo de los Polvazares, which is considered the most representative of the Maragatan spirit.

In Hospital de órbigo , the bridge called "Paso honorable", famous for the feat of the Knight of Suero de Quiñones in 1434. At the entrance of Astorga, you can see the Cross of Santo Toribio. In Astorga special mention to the Cathedral, the Archiepiscopal Palace of Gaudi and the Plaza Mayor.

STAGE RABANAL DEL CAMINO-VILLAFRANCA DEL BIERZO (55,7 KMS - 34,53 MILES)

Breakfast and Begining of the journey.

You leave Irago and start the ascent to Mount Irago, with Foncebadon in the top. Through the mythical Cruz del Ferro (Maximum altitude of the Camino) you descend to Molinaseca with its incredieble medieval bridge and Ponferrada (Bierzo’s capital). Through vineyards and paths you arrive to Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo.

Special mention in this stage to the views from Mount Irago, the templar castle in Ponferrada, and the Romanesque church of Santiago in Villafranca del Bierzo.

STAGE VILLAFRANCA DEL BIERZO-SAMOS(60 KMS - 37,2 MILES)

Breakfast and Begining of the journey.

The stage is in the vicinity of the old National Road VI and the valley of the river Valcarce.

You have to ascent to O Cebreiro, which is the beginning of the Camino de Santiago in Galicia. In this town, located 1300 meters above sea level, we will see "Las Pallozas" (constructions of stone and hay) presumably of Celtic origin. Stone houses that remind us of the past are also the main constructions of this mountainous area.

O Cebreiro is a mythical and symbolic village which include The sanctuary of Santa Maria a Real do Cebreiro.

From the mountain pass at O Poio (1,337 m) the highest point on the French Way in Galicia, the route begins its gentle descent towards

Fonfría, and from here, it arrives at the town of Triacastela.

On leaving Triacastela the Way forks. It is possible to continue directly on to Sarria, passing through San Xil or however, we prefer to head south, seeking out the hospitality of the monks of the Benedictine Monastery of Samos, who still run the old inn kilometers to Santiago.

The stretch leading to the town of Samos offers not only the opportunity to admire the ancient monastery, but also the spectacular landscapes bathed by the Sarria river and of villages such as San CristovoRenche and San Martiño.

The Monastery of Samos is considered to be one of the oldest in the western world, with its origins dating back as far as the 6th century.

STAGE SAMOS-PALAS DE REI (59 KMS - 36,58 MILES)

Breakfast and Begining of the journey.

From Samos you reach Sarria, you pass by the 100 Km marker of this ancient route (the minimum distance to be traveled on foot to receive the Compostela). Travelling through a continuous masses of chestnut and oak, meadows, and farmland.

The next important is Portomarín where it is necessary to cross the bridge over the Belesar reservoir, in the Miño river.

You leave Portomarin through the Belesar reservoir. You reach  the towns of LigondeVilachá and Palas de Rei.

During this stage we can admire the Romanesque churches of Barbadelos and FerreirosBelesar Reservoir and the church-Fortress of St.Nicholas in Portomarin.

You can find many signs which indicate you are on pilgrimage area, including the famous “Cruceiros (Stone crosses)”. Special mention to the the Cruceiro of Lameiros and the Monastery of San Savador de Villar de Donas.

STAGE PALAS DE REI-SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA(66 KMS - 40,92 MILES)

Breakfast and Begining of the journey.

Today's stage you will cross the border that divides the provinces of Lugo and La Coruña through masses of eucaliptus and pine. You will pass throuhg numerous medieval bridges (Leboreiro, Furelos and Ribadiso do baixo). Another place to stop is the village of Melide, really well-known for the the octopus.

From Melide you arrive to Arzúa, where you can visit the beautiful chapel of "La Magdalena"  and enjoy the delicious cheese , given denomination of origin.

The way goes again through meadows, oak and eucalyptus trees.

In Boente, you can see the beautiful statue of Santiago the pilgrim (Santiago’s church)

The last step of your Camino de Santiago is the city of Santiago, your goal has double feeling: “I  did it, I am in Santiago!”, but “This in the end”. 

The way passes next to the airport and starts the gentle descent towards A Lavacolla. A Lavacolla is located very close from the Monte do Gozo (Mount of Joy), a hill from where the pilgrims catch their first glimpse of Santiago's cathedral.
