Camino Santiago on foot: León-O Cebreiro

Route that runs through very different regions of León until its entry into Galicia by the legendary O Cebreiro, with its enormous significance on the Camino de Santiago.

We will visit the Maragateria, with the monumental Astorga and Ponferrada, capital of Bierzo, with its spectacular Templar Castle. Half way, we will find the mythical Cruz del Ferro, the maximum altitude of the French Way.

Camino Francés itinerary from León (8 days-7 nights-6 stages)

Day 1: Arrival in León. Accommodation.
Day 2: Stage León-San Martin del Camino (26.15 kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 6h 30m

Breakfast and start of the stage.

We leave León, as in any large city, along residential and industrial areas. The stage runs through dirt tracks and asphalt, very close to the road.

We highlight the step by Virgen del Camino, Valverde of the Virgin Y San Miguel del Camino, until our arrival in San Martín del Camino.

Day 3: Stage San Martin del Camino-Astorga (22.16 kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 5h 30m

Stage similar to the previous one, until reaching Hospital of Orbigo, where we find the spectacular medieval bridge, which gave rise to the historical fact of the Hazaña de Don Suero de Quiñones.

From here, our Camino runs along a beautiful path, with wooded areas, páramos and cultivation areas.

The Santo Toribio Cruise, precedes our imminent arrival in Astorga, with its fabulous Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, work of Gaudí.

Day 4: Stage Astorga-Rabanal del Camino (19,61 kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 5h

We enter fully into the Region of Maragateria, area of páramos, with typical stone houses and large and colorful wooden gates. Precious stage and without any difficulty.

Castrillo de los Polvazares and Santa Catalina de Somoza, are some small rural centers, that we will meet.

Day 5: Stage Rabanal del Camino-Ponferrada (32,12 Kms)
Difficulty: High Duration: 8h 30m

Spectacular stage, with rise to Foncebadón and mythical Cruz de Ferro, Maximum altitude of the French Way.

Throughout the tour the landscape will captivate us, with splendid views of the Montes de León and the Comarca del Bierzo.

Small and typical towns such as Foncebadón, El Acebo, Riego de Ambrós and Molinaseca, with its beautiful medieval bridge, are some of the locations of our stage today, until you reach Ponferrada, with its magnificent Castle of the Templars.

For those people with little physical preparation or who prefer to perform the stage more calmly and relaxed, It would be advisable to divide the stage in two days:

- Stage: Rabanal del Camino - El Acebo (16 Kms)

- Stage: El Acebo - Ponferrada (16 Kms)

Day 6: Stage Ponferrada-Villafranca del Bierzo (22.35 kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 5h 30m

Stage that runs in its first part by numerous urban centers, until Camponaraya pass. From here, areas of vineyards and dirt tracks, with Cacabelos as the main witness, will accompany us on our way to Villafranca del Bierzo with its wonderful monuments and churches, such as the Romanesque church of Santiago.

Day 7: Stage Villafranca del Bierzo-O Cebreiro (29.73 km)
Difficulty: High Duration: 8h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

The arrival in Galicia, with its final in the legendary O Cebreiro, marks today's stage. Andaderos, at the exit of Villafranca, until the entrance to Valcarce Valley, with its numerous and typical Berzian villages, with their slate roof and granite walls.

Las Herrerias and Hospital, followed by the steep climb to La Faba, and Laguna de Castilla, with breathtaking views, until our long-awaited arrival in Cebreiro, with its Romanesque Church of Santa María, one of the historical jewels of the Camino.
