Camino de Santiago from León to O Cebreiro

The Camino de Santiago from León to O Cebreiro runs through different regions of León until it enters Galicia through the mythical O Cebreiro, with its enormous significance on the Camino de Santiago.

We will visit the Maragateria, with the monumental Astorga and Ponferrada, capital of Bierzo, with its spectacular Templar Castle. Halfway, we will find the mythical Cruz del Ferro, maximum altitude of the French Way.

Itinerary French Way from León (8 days-7 nights-6 stages)

Day 1: Arrival in León. Accommodation.
Day 2: León – San Martin del Camino Stage (26,15 km)
Difficulty: Easy Duration: 6h 30m

Breakfast and start of the first stage from León.

We leave León, as in any major city, along residential and industrial areas. The stage runs along dirt and asphalt tracks, very close to the road.

We highlight the passage through Virgen del Camino, Valverde de la Virgen and San Miguel del Camino, until our arrival in San Martín del Camino.

Day 3: Stage San Martin del Camino – Astorga (22,16 kms)
Difficulty: Easy Duration: 5h 30m

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Stage similar to the previous one, until we reached Hospital de Orbigo, where we found the spectacular medieval bridge, which gave rise to the historical event of the feat of Don Suero de Quiñones.

From here, our Path runs along a beautiful road, with wooded areas, badlands and growing areas.

The Cruceuio de Santo Toribio, precedes our imminent arrival in Astorga, with its fabulous Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, the work of Gaudí.

Day 4: Astorga – Rabanal del Camino Stage (19,61 kms)
Difficulty: Easy Duration: 5h

We entered fully into the Comarca de la Maragateria, moorland area, with typical stone houses and large and colorful wooden gates. Beautiful stage and without any difficulty.

Castrillo de los Polvazares and Santa Catalina de Somoza, are some small rural towns that we will meet. Lands known for their famous cooked Maragato, the only one that eats backwards.

Day 5: Rabanal Stage of the Camino – Ponferrada (32,12 Kms)
Difficulty: High Duration: 8h 30m

Spectacular stage, with ascent to Foncebadón and the mythical Cruz de Ferro, highest altitude of the French Way.

Throughout the tour the landscape will captivate us, with splendid views of the Montes de León and the Comarca del Bierzo.

Small and typical towns such as Foncebadón, El Acebo, Riego de Ambrós and Molinaseca, with their beautiful medieval bridge, are some of the towns of our stage today, until reaching Ponferrada, with its magnificent Templar Castle.

For those people with little physical preparation or who prefer to perform the stage in a more calm and relaxed way, it would be advisable to divide the stage into two days:

Stage: Rabanal del Camino - El Acebo (16 Kms)

Stage: El Acebo - Ponferrada (16 Kms)

Day 6: Stage Ponferrada – Villafranca del Bierzo (22,35 km)
Difficulty: Easy Duration: 5h 30m

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Stage that runs in its first part through many urban centers, until passing Camponaraya. From here, areas of vineyards and dirt tracks, with Cacabelos as the main witness, will accompany us on our way to Villafranca del Bierzo with its wonderful monuments and churches, such as the Romanesque Church of Santiago.

Day 7: Villafranca del Bierzo – O Cebreiro stage (29,73 km)
Difficulty: High Duration: 8h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

The arrival in Galicia, with its end in the mythical O Cebreiro, marks today's stage. Andaderos, at the exit of Villafranca, until the entrance to the Valcarce Valley, with its many typical Berzian villages, with its slate roof and granite walls.

The Herrerias and Hospital, give way to the steep climb to La Faba, and Laguna de Castilla, with impressive views, until our long-awaited arrival in Cebreiro, with its Romanesque Church of Santa María, one of the historical jewels of the Camino, and cradle of the legend of the Galician Holy Grail.
