On foot: Bilbao-Santander

Sea and mountain are the hallmarks of this route, which started in Bilbao. Coastal cities, with a large cultural richness and history as Castro Urdiales, Laredo, and Santander, which we will access by boat with the Palacio de la Magdalena as a witness, will be the main attractions of this beautiful route of the Camino del Norte.

Itinerary (7 days- 6 nights-5 stages)

Day 1: Arrival in Bilbao. Accommodation.
Day 2: Stage Bilbao-Portugalete (19,61 Kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 4h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Stage that runs, along the ria of Bilbao, on the right bank of the Nervión River, if we decide not to take the Official Road.

The Official Road passes through numerous streets of Bilbao, Baracaldo and Sestao, through industrial neighborhoods, with numerous slopes, before reaching our destination. We leave this decision, for our pilgrims.

We highlight in this stage, all the Casco Viejo de Bilbao, with its Plaza Nueva, the Cathedral of Santiago, Basilica de Begoña, City Hall and Guggenheim Museum.

In Portugalete, the symbol of the City - the Suspension bridgeWorld Heritage.

Day 3: Stage Portugalete-Castro Urdiales (27 kms)
Difficulty: Medium Duration: 7h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

In this stage we meet again with the Cantabrian Sea, at the Playa de la Arena, at the end of the bidegorri, which has brought us from Portugalete. We entered Cantabria, with Ontón, as the first Cantabrian city, to go to the beautiful Castro Urdiales, before having enjoyed some magnificent views of it, from a distance.

We highlight the Church of Santa Maria, the Castle-Lighthouse and the hermitage of Santa Ana, in this town.

Day 4: Stage Castro Urdiales-Laredo (26.6 kms)
Difficulty: Medium Duration: 6h 30m

Stage that, in its first half, runs close to the sea, with continuous views of cliffs and wooded areas, between Cerdido and Islares, to enter, later, into the interior, where, to a large extent, we will cross a lot of paved road until we reach Laredo, that in his day was the «Port of Castilla», with its excellent beaches and splendid church.

We emphasize in this stage the Church of San Vicente de la Maza (Guriezo), the Church of San Martin (Islares), Churches of Santa Maria (Liendo and Rioseco)

In Laredo, we can see the Church of Santa María de la Asunción, Houses of Nobles and the town hall building.

Day 5: Stage Laredo-Guemes (26,89 Kms)
Difficulty: Medium Duration: 7h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

The stage begins at the Puntal de Laredo, where a boat will take us to Santoña, famous for its canning industry, mainly its famous anchovies. The stage goes by, in many areas where the views of the sea are constant. We will cross the beach of Berria and Noja, where we cross the hill of El Brusco, which will give us beautiful views. We will visit large green areas with scattered population centers and flat land.

We emphasize in this stage, the Church of Santa Maria del Puerto, in Santoña and the Church of Santa María de Bareyo.

Arrival in Guemes. End of the stage.

Day 6: Guemes-Santander Stage (11.56 kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 3h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Short, totally flat stage, where we will also have to take the boat (Pedreñeras) that from Somo, will help us to reach Santander, through its bay.

As an option, we can take the coastal variant that, from Galizano, Langre and Loredo, takes us to Somo.

The points of interest of this stage are: Church of Our Lady of Cans, in Somo, as well as the Santander Cathedral, Porticada Square Y Palace of the Magdalena, in the same city.

Arrival in Santander. End of the stage.

All establishments have been supervised and selected by Viajes Mundiplus, based on the satisfaction expressed by our customers over the years. On our routes, we never offer hostels.
