Way on foot: Irun-Bilbao

On the Camino de Santiago from Irún to Bilbao alternates the coastal area next to the mountain.Irún is the starting point of the Camino del Norte. Rich and copious gastronomy. Exuberant landscapes and spectacular views will accompany the pilgrim through the Basque lands.

Itinerary (8 days-7 nights-6 stages)

Day 1: Arrival in Irun. Accommodation.
Day 2: Stage Irún-San Sebastian (27,46 kms)
Difficulty: Medium Duration: 7h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Stage that runs between the coast and the mountain. Once arrived at Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we will go by the skirt of Mount Jaizkibel, through tracks and trees. We will arrive at Pasajes de San Juan, where we will cross the estuary to Pasajes de San Pedro, by boat.

The entrance to San Sebastian, will give us some beautiful views of the Donostia Bay.

Arrival in San Sebastian. End of the stage.

Day 3: Stage San Sebastian-Zarauz (22.72 kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 5h 30m

Breakfast and start of the stage.

The exit of the city will offer us, magnificent views from the Monte Igeldo, which we will access, as soon as the stage begins.

Stage similar to the previous one, with wooded areas and dirt tracks, in most of the route.

Orio, a fishing village par excellence, is the town prior to our arrival in Zarauz.

Arrival in Zarauz. End of the stage.

Day 4: Zarauz-Deba Stage (21.55 kms)
Difficulty: Low Duration: 5h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Stage that passes very close to the sea, half slope of the mountain and with constant ups and downs.

Magnificent views and important fishing villages, such as Guetaria, and Zumaia, we will meet until we reach Deba.

Arrival in Deba. End of the stage.

Day 5: Stage Deba-Markina (22,53 Kms)
Difficulty: Medium Duration: 5h 30m

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Stage with absence of population centers and with lots of typical farmhouses and large areas of trees, will accompany us throughout the route.

We highlight the Calvario de Maia and the area of Caserio de Kostolamendi, as the maximum altitude of the stage.

Arrival at Markina. End of the stage.

Day 6: Markina-Guernika stage (25 kms)
Difficulty: Medium Duration: 6h 15m

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Numerous rural centers, some with history, such as Bolibar, mark this stage, which runs through land similar to the previous stage, with some medieval road, like the one that gives access to Collegiate Church of Ziortza and with the final surprise, before arriving in Gernika, having entered the Urdabai Biosphere Reserve.

Arrival in Guernika. End of the stage.

Day 7: Guernika-Bilbao Stage (31.5 Kms)
Difficulty: Medium Duration: 8h

Breakfast and start of the stage.

Stage with two faces, like all those that end in large population centers. Half of it, it offers us the bucolic and rural environment, of all our route, since we started our Way in Irun, and the rest we find the industrial development, typical of large cities.

Arrival in Bilbao. End of the stage.


For those people with little physical preparation or who prefer to perform the stage more calmly and relaxed, it would be advisable to divide the stage in two days:

- Stage: Guernika - Lezama (20.7 Kms)

- Stage: Lezama - Bilbao (10,8 Kms)

The accommodations that we offer to our clients are from great quality and all rooms have a private bathroom, as well as the necessary services for your comfort. All establishments have been supervised and selected by Viajes Mundiplus, based on the satisfaction expressed by our customers over the years. On our routes, we never offer hostels.
