Practical Data

Here below is a set of useful information for all pilgrims who finish their pilgrimage in Santiago de Compostela.

To collect LA COMPOSTELA and CERTIFICATE OF DISTANCE, which is issued from this year on 2017, you have to go to the PILGRIM’S RECEPTION OFFICE, located at Rua das Carretas, 33.

Pilgrim's reception office has the following opening hours for pilgrims:

From Easter to 31st October: open from 8.00 a.m. to 21.00 p.m.

In winter (from 1st November to Easter): open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

The Pilgrim’s Reception Office is closed on 25th December, Christmas, and 1st January, New Year's Day.

In the pilgrim’s reception office they will ask us what has been our motivation to make the Way, religious reasons, spiritual path or others. La Compostela will be given on account of religious reasons and a certificate will be given owing to other motivations.

In the Cathedral of Santiago two pilgrim masses take place every day, at 12:00 pm and at 7:30 pm. The largest attendance of pilgrims is in the morning. The only difference between the morning mass and the evening one is that during the 12:00 pm mass some statistics are indicated with regard to the origin and nationality of the pilgrims who arrived in Santiago the day before.

Special days in which the BOTAFUMEIRO FUNCTIONING is guaranteed, since its use is only reserved on certain dates, or by prepayment made by groups of pilgrims who expressly request it:

- January 6: Epiphany.

- Easter Sunday.

- Ascension of Our Lord.

- May 23: Anniversary of the Battle of Clavijo.

- Pentecost (50 days after Easter).

- July 25: Feast of St. James.

- August 15: Assumption.

- November 1: All Saints’ Day.

- Feast of Christ the King (Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent).

- December 8: Immaculate Conception.

- December 25: Christmas.

- December 30: Arrival of the Holy Apostle.

As a general rule of operation, either on special solemnities or hired by a group, the use of the botafumeiro takes place at the 12 pm Mass.

At the Mass on all Fridays at 7:30 p.m., botafumeiro used to be bounced, but at least for now, and until further notice, it is canceled.

Pilgrims who want to visit the Cathedral Museum have to go to the Visitor Reception Center. (Crypt of the Portico of Glory, Plaza del Obradoiro)
