Tui is the gateway to Spain for the “Portuguese Way”, which starts in Lisbon. In Galicia the path continues parallel to the Rias Bajas of Vigo and Pontevedra.

ARRIVAL IN TUI.

You spend the night in Tui and the next day you start the first stage of the journey.

STAGE TUI-REDONDELA (31,2 Kms/19 Miles)

Difficulty: Medium   Approx. Duration: 8h

Beginning of the journey.

Tui is the gateway to Spain for the "Portuguese Way", gets into Galicia through the International Bridge, inspired by the work of the famous Gustave Eiffel, over the Miño river. In Tui you have to visit the Cathedral and the church of San Telmo.

The Way heads to O Porriño cross the Veiga bridge, over the Louro river, one of the most important in this trip. You have to pass an industrial park and then enter in Porriño.

From O Porriño you cross and continue to Mos, passing through the Church of Santa Eulalia and close to the Pazo of the Marquesses of Mos.

On the way to Redondela you have to visit the Santiaguiño chapel and the Cruceiro Os Cabaleiros.

- ADVICE -

For those with a normal physical preparation or who prefer to walk the stage with more calm and relax, we recommend to split the stage in two days:

- Stage: Tui - Porriño (16,4 Kms - 10 Miles)

- Stage: Porriño - Redondela (14,8 Kms - 9 Miles)

STAGE REDONDELA-PONTEVEDRA (19,8 Kms/12 miles)

Difficulty: Easy   Approx. Duration: 5h

Beginning of the journey.

You leave Redondela through the forest.

Today’s stage you pass some impostant places as Monte Albor and Pontecesures. In Arcade you have to taste its famous and internationally oysters, the best one in Galicia.

You cross the medieval Ponte Sampaio bridge, over the Verdugo river, where the army of Napoleon suffered one of its greatest defeats in Galicia.

Pontevedra and its Sanctuary of the Virgen Peregrina is waiting for you at the end of this stage. Enjoy the views over the Bay of Vigo.

STAGE PONTEVEDRA-CALDAS DE REI (21,9 Kms/13 miles)

Difficulty: Easy   Approx. Duration: 5h 30'

Beginning of the journey.

You leave the old city of Pontevedra walking to the millennial bridge, O Burgo, over the Lérez River. We continue along the beautiful Valley of the Gandra River until San Mauro. The Way starts heading to Ponte Balbón and from there towards O Ameal, Tivo and reach Caldas de Reis alongside the church of Santa Maria, close to the bridge of the Umia River. Caldas is an important spa village

STAGE CALDAS DE REI-PADRON (18,5 Kms/ 11 miles)

Difficulty: Easy   Approx. Duration: 4h 30'

Beginning of the journey.

This stage is considered one of the most beautiful of this area.

We leave Caldas de Reis across the medieval bridge of the Bermaña River and follow a path that leads us to the village of Cruceiro. After walking the green Bermaña, Valga valleys and Pontecesures, you reach the town of Padrón crossing the Ulla river.

When the body of Saint James was being brought to Compostela by boat, Padrón was said to be the first land it moored.

STAGE PADRON-SANTIAGO (24,6 Kms/15 miles)

Difficulty: Easy   Approx. Duration: 6h

Beginning of the journey.

The Camino passes through many small villages and hamlets before arriving at the Baroque Sanctuary of A Esclavitude. On a hilltop to the left stands the mysterious, abandoned ruins of the hillfort Castro Lupario, and couple of kilometres later, we come to the oldest wayside crosses in Galicia. As we near Agro dos Monteiros, it is now possible to see the towers of the cathedral. Finally the Camino passes by the ruins of a castle known as A Rocha Vella, before entering the city of the Apostle where you will stay in the San Francisco a renovated Franciscan Monastery 150m from the Cathedral.

Under the main altar is "El Pedrón", stone that is said to have been used to tie the boat in which the Apostle Santiago was moved, already dead, from Palestine to the Galician coasts.
