Below we highlight the main Camino de Santiago routes and the waterfalls you\u2019ll find on each\u2014either <\/span><b>right on the trail or via short detours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Located on the border of the municipalities of Touro and Arz\u00faa, this waterfall is surrounded by lush vegetation and features an old mill. It\u2019s also known for a <\/span><b>miraculous legend linked to the saint it\u2019s named after<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The setting offers a rich combination of natural beauty and sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you walk through the Navarrese Pyrenees at the beginning of the route, you\u2019ll also enjoy <\/span><b>numerous mountain streams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though there aren\u2019t any particularly tall waterfalls along the path. Even so, the French Way offers abundant nature in both its Galician and Pyrenean stages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Northern Way (Camino del Norte \u2013 Cantabrian Coast)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Northern Way presents several natural spectacles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Cantabria, the highlight is the <\/span><b>Bolao Waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, next to the <\/span><b>cliffs of C\u00f3breces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Formed where the La Presa stream drops into the sea, it creates a postcard-perfect scene with the <\/span><b>remains of an old mill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beside it. It\u2019s actually the <\/span><b>closest freshwater waterfall to the sea in Cantabria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The contrast of green meadows, rocky cliffs, and the blue Cantabrian Sea makes it truly special.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilgrims can visit it easily, as it\u2019s located just <\/span><b>metres from the coastal trail<\/b> <b>between Santillana del Mar and Comillas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A must-see if you&#8217;re walking the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/en\/caminos\/a-pie\/camino-norte\/camino-de-santiago-desde-santander\/\"><b>Camino de Santiago from Santander to Gij\u00f3n<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Asturias, the route passes through areas where small rivers flow into the sea; while not as tall as Bolao, there are smaller falls and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bufones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sea geysers) found in the limestone cliffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, near the Asturian coastal path you\u2019ll find the <\/span><b>Oneta Waterfalls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (three tiered waterfalls near Luarca), along with other hidden springs tucked within the coastal vegetation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Original Way (Camino Primitivo)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Original Way, from Oviedo to Lugo, passes through valleys and mountains in Asturias with an abundance of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A must-see is the <\/span><b>Nonaya River Waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, near Salas. On the stage from Salas to Tineo, around kilometre 3, you\u2019ll see a signposted detour to the waterfall; it\u2019s just <\/span><b>an extra 250 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and definitely worth it. It\u2019s not exactly on the path (you\u2019ll need to head up the valley a few kilometres from Neda), but if you have the time, it\u2019s well worth a visit to see <\/span><b>one of Galicia\u2019s most spectacular waterfalls, standing 45 metres tall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It plunges in the middle of a forest, forming <\/span><b>natural pools at its base<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A key stop on the <\/span><b>central route<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>Fervenza do R\u00edo Barosa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Barro (between Pontevedra and Caldas de Reis).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This natural site is <\/span><b>part of the Camino itself<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a stone trail climbs alongside the waterfall, passing <\/span><b>17 restored water mills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that accompany the <\/span><b>30-metre drop<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Barosa River. The site, known as <\/span><b>Parque da Natureza do R\u00edo Barosa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is perfect for a break, with picnic areas and natural pools to cool your feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not far away, in Caldas de Reis, is another waterfall called the <\/span><b>Fervenza de Segade<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, surrounded by the ruins of an old hydroelectric plant, mills and even a <\/span><b>nearby Roman bridge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a lesser-known spot, but very accessible from the spa town of Caldas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the coastal variant of the Portuguese Way also offers natural highlights. After Porto, the path follows the Atlantic Ocean and, although the coast lacks major waterfalls, <\/span><b>the nearby inland areas do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Galicia, where the coastal and central routes merge in Redondela, the <\/span><b>Fervenza da Feixa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Reboreda (Redondela) is worth a mention. This <\/span><b>15-metre waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is hidden in a riverside forest fed by the Alvedosa River. Many pilgrims are unaware of this hidden gem, but locals recommend it as a <\/span><b>perfect evening walk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if staying overnight in Redondela.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Vigo and Baiona area, there are also numerous streams that form smaller waterfalls in natural parks (such as the <\/span><b>Casari\u00f1os waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near Fornelos de Montes).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you choose the Portuguese Coastal Way, especially on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/en\/caminos\/a-pie\/camino-portugues-costa\/camino-desde-oporto-a-a-guarda\/\"><b>Camino de Santiago from Porto to A Guarda<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/en\/caminos\/a-pie\/camino-portugues-costa\/camino-de-santiago-desde-a-guarda\/\"><b>Way from A Guarda to Santiago<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll enjoy the sea breeze and, further inland, river spots with waterfalls and ancient mills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Via de la Plata (Sanabr\u00e9s Way)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-122608 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Fervenza-do-Toxa-Mundiplus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Fervenza-do-Toxa-Mundiplus.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Fervenza-do-Toxa-Mundiplus-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Fervenza-do-Toxa-Mundiplus-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Fervenza-do-Toxa-Mundiplus-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Via de la Plata, or South-Eastern Way, enters Galicia through the province of Ourense. One of its final stretches passes very close to the <\/span><b>Fervenza do Toxa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, considered <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><\/i><b><i>tallest free-falling waterfall in Galicia<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Located in Silleda (Pontevedra), just a few kilometres off the official route, the Toxa River waterfall drops an impressive <\/span><b>30 vertical metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is surrounded by native oak and chestnut forests, inviting you to stroll along shaded trails to the viewpoints. In fact, a short detour allows pilgrims to reach a <\/span><b>natural balcony<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from which to admire the confluence of the Toxa and Deza rivers and the spectacular waterfall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very close by are other places of interest such as the historic <\/span><b><i>Ponte do Demo<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a medieval bridge) and the <\/span><b>Monastery of Carboeiro<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many pilgrims on the Sanabr\u00e9s Way take the opportunity to visit once they reach Silleda or Bandeira, knowing Santiago is just a couple of days away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other noteworthy waterfalls along this route include the <\/span><b>Fervenza de F\u00e9rveda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in Silleda municipality, with a 15-metre main drop) and small cascades in mountain rivers across the province of Ourense, though these are less known.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Winter Way<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This alternative route crosses the <\/span><b>Ribeira Sacra in Lugo and Ourense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following the Sil River valley to avoid the snow-covered peaks in winter. The Winter Way offers incredible river landscapes and, of course, waterfalls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most remarkable is the <\/span><b>Augaca\u00edda Waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Pant\u00f3n (Lugo). It\u2019s a <\/span><b>roughly 40-metre high<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drop close to where it flows into the Mi\u00f1o River. It lies very near the Winter Way trail and is accessed on foot via a short route through woodland with wooden walkways. The effort is well worth it: Augaca\u00edda is considered a natural gem of the Ribeira Sacra.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also along this trail, you can visit the <\/span><b>Castro de Marce<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Celtic settlement high in the valley, combining nature with archaeology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other waterfall spots on the Winter Way include the <\/span><b><i>Barxa de Lor<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> area in Quiroga (with small cascades in streams) and historical springs like the <\/span><b><i>Fuente de San Benito<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Ourense mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Way to Fisterra and Mux\u00eda<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-122602 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Cascada-de-Ezaro-Mundiplus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Cascada-de-Ezaro-Mundiplus.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Cascada-de-Ezaro-Mundiplus-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Cascada-de-Ezaro-Mundiplus-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Cascada-de-Ezaro-Mundiplus-600x401.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many pilgrims continue to the Atlantic coast after reaching Compostela. In this extension, nature once again takes centre stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The undisputed highlight is the <\/span><b>\u00c9zaro Waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Dumbr\u00eda (Costa da Morte). It is the <\/span><b>only waterfall in Europe whose river flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a rare phenomenon that has earned it the nickname \u201cthe Galician Niagara\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Xallas River drops in \u00c9zaro from around <\/span><b>40 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before reaching the sea, creating a one-of-a-kind spectacle at the beach. In the past, the flow was regulated by hydroelectric dams and the waterfall was often dry, but since 2011 a law <\/span><b>ensures a constant flow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bringing life back to this natural setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilgrims walking the Way to Fisterra pass very near \u00c9zaro <\/span><b>between the stages of Olveiroa and Cee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many choose to visit this iconic site.
