It was for those <\/span><b>Pilgrims who could not reach Compostela for health reasons could still reach the Jubilee.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilgrims must cross the famous <\/span><b>Door of Forgiveness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is only open during the Jubilee. It was built at <\/span><b>beginning of the 16th century by the II Marquis of Villafranca<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Today, it is a private property and unfortunately we cannot see its interior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This construction was built <\/span><b>on the ruins of another older castle which they called <\/b><b><i>The force. <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the French invasion, it was <\/span><b>looted by the English<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who were fleeing towards Lugo and later, <\/span><b>the Gallic troops devastated it <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and they burned everything in their path.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Church of San Francisco<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of San Jer\u00f3nimo street, you will find the <\/span><b>Iglesia de San Francisco<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another of the most striking points is the <\/span><b>choir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Plateresque style, very in line with the austere style of the Franciscans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here too <\/span><b>several tombs are found<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of different gentlemen and ladies of great importance in Villafranca society.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raised on a <\/span><b>old monastery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who settled in the town in the mid-12th century under the Order of Cluny. It served as accommodation for French pilgrims, in addition to being a place where wine agriculture was promoted in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a clear example of the <\/span><b>Bercian architecture typical of the 16th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was also very popular in the area. You should know that this construction<\/span><b> It took nearly 200 years to be completed.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The church was built by order of the Marquis of Villafranca. Was <\/span><b>built during the 17th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a very traditional design of the Company of Jesus, who designed it as a school for children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has an impressive fa\u00e7ade that is crowned by the Jesuit shield. Inside, it houses the image of the patron saint of Villafranca, the Christ of Hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Plaza Mayor of Villafranca del Bierzo<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in any town in Spain, a visit to the Plaza Mayor of Villafranca del Bierzo is necessary to see first-hand its daily life. It is presided over by the town hall and over the years arcades have been added that help protect the different terraces of bars and restaurants that are around from the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the right place if you want to enjoy some local cuisine or simply have a drink while enjoying the views. It is undoubtedly one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/en\/blog\/pueblos-pintorescos-camino-de-santiago\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most picturesque towns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Jacobean route, so write it down on your map of the Camino de Santiago Franc\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Water Street<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last, but not least, is Calle del Agua, for some, <\/span><b>the most famous in all of Villafranca del Bierzo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, surrounded by beautiful<\/span><b> stately style houses,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many of them with noble coats of arms, some palaces and also wineries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gt-block\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Villafranca del Bierzo is just a few kilometers from the border between Le\u00f3n and Lugo, so if you are planning to do the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundiplus.com\/en\/caminos\/a-pie\/camino-frances\/camino-de-santiago-desde-sarria\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French road to Santiago from Sarria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may be interested in rescheduling the route and starting a section earlier.
